A donated research vessel can directly support marine mammal conservation by providing a platform for scientific research, conservation, education, rescue support, and ocean monitoring. Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom is seeking the donation of a research vessel to help advance our mission of protecting dolphins, other marine mammals, and marine ecosystems through science-based conservation.
Why We Need a Research Vessel
A dedicated research vessel will allow Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom to conduct dolphin vocalization and acoustic research, monitor marine mammal populations, collect environmental data, document conservation activities, support marine mammal rescue efforts when authorized, and provide an educational platform for students, volunteers, and the public. A vessel will also help us expand partnerships with researchers, universities, aquariums, and conservation organizations while advancing science-based marine conservation.
Ideal Vessel Specifications
We understand that every vessel is unique. The following specifications describe our ideal research vessel, but we encourage anyone considering a donation to contact us even if their vessel does not meet every preference.
Vessel Type
Trawler, motor yacht, expedition vessel, or catamaran preferred. Other vessel types will also be considered if they can safely support Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom’s research, conservation, education, and future marine mammal rescue efforts.
Length
Ideally 65 to 100 feet in length to support Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom’s long-term research, conservation, education, and future marine mammal rescue mission. However, we welcome inquiries about smaller or larger vessels that can safely support our mission.
Propulsion & Cruising Range
Reliable diesel propulsion is preferred for long-term reliability, efficiency, and extended coastal research operations. Hybrid diesel-electric propulsion is also welcomed where available. A cruising range capable of supporting multi-day research expeditions is preferred; however, all suitable vessels will be considered based on their overall capabilities and condition.
Layout & Onboard Facilities
The ideal research vessel should provide a functional and safe layout that supports scientific research, education, and extended field operations. Preferred features include a protected cabin for navigation and data analysis, sleeping accommodations for crew and researchers, a galley, an enclosed head (bathroom), ample storage for research equipment, and open deck space for marine mammal observation, photography, acoustic monitoring, and the safe deployment of scientific equipment.
Navigation & Research Equipment
Preferred equipment includes GPS navigation, radar, AIS, VHF marine radios, depth sounder, autopilot, and modern navigation systems. Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom also welcomes vessels equipped with research-friendly features such as sonar, hydrophone mounting locations, weather monitoring equipment, dive platforms, davits or cranes for deploying scientific equipment, and adequate electrical capacity to support computers, cameras, and other research technology
Safety & Vessel Condition
Safety is a top priority for Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom. We welcome vessels that are structurally sound and capable of being safely operated or restored to safe operating condition through reasonable maintenance and repairs. The donor must be able to legally transfer ownership of the vessel.

Our team will work with you throughout the donation process, answer your questions, review the vessel’s suitability for our mission, and assist with the transfer process. Every potential vessel donation is reviewed individually to ensure it can safely and effectively support our conservation, research, education, and future rescue efforts.
Donation Process
1. Initial Contact
Contact Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom to discuss your vessel and how it may support our mission.
2. Vessel Information
Provide basic information about the vessel, including its make, model, length, year, current condition, location, and any available photographs or maintenance records.
3. Vessel Review
Our team will review the information provided to determine whether the vessel is suitable for our current or future research, conservation, education, and marine mammal rescue objectives. We may request additional information or arrange a vessel inspection if necessary.
4. Donation Discussion
If the vessel appears to meet our needs, we will work with you to discuss the donation process, ownership transfer requirements, and any additional documentation that may be needed.
5. Ownership Transfer
Once both parties agree to proceed, the vessel title and any required legal documents will be transferred in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.
6. Mission Preparation
Following the donation, Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom will evaluate the vessel, complete any necessary preparations, and integrate it into our research, conservation, education, and future marine mammal rescue mission as appropriate.
