About Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom

Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom (OCWOF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting dolphins through ethical, science-based conservation. Our mission is to develop a humane seaside sanctuary for non-releasable dolphins while advancing research, education, and public awareness.

We believe dolphins deserve a life beyond captivity—one that prioritizes their welfare, natural behaviors, and long-term well-being. Through responsible research, conservation planning, and collaboration, OCWOF is working to create a future where marine mammals are protected with integrity and respect.

Our work brings together science, advocacy, and community engagement to support both individual animals and the ecosystems they depend on.

  • Dolphin Seaside Sanctuary Development(Long-Term Conservation Initiative)
  • Dolphin Vocalization & Acoustic Research(Scientific Research Program)
  • Conservation Education & Public Outreach(Community Engagement & Awareness)

Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom was founded by Dawn Bishop with a clear purpose: to create a humane alternative for dolphins who can no longer be released into the wild.

What began as a personal mission has grown into a structured, science-driven initiative focused on long-term solutions for marine mammal welfare. The vision is simple but urgent—replace outdated models of captivity with ethical sanctuary environments that prioritize the health, dignity, and natural behaviors of each animal.

Through persistence, research, and collaboration, OCWOF is working to turn that vision into reality.

What We Do

Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom is actively working to advance marine mammal protection through three key areas:

  • Sanctuary Development: Researching and planning a humane seaside sanctuary for dolphins who cannot be released into the wild
  • Scientific Research: Conducting and supporting dolphin vocalization and acoustic monitoring studies to better understand marine environments
  • Education & Outreach: Raising awareness about dolphin welfare, conservation challenges, and ethical alternatives to captivity

Why This Matters

Thousands of dolphins around the world remain in captive environments that do not fully meet their physical and behavioral needs. While some can be rehabilitated and released, others require long-term care solutions.

Seaside sanctuaries offer a humane alternative—providing a more natural ocean environment while ensuring safety, medical care, and long-term welfare. Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom is working to help make this solution a reality in the United States.

Our Approach

OCWOF is guided by a science-based, ethical approach to marine conservation:

  • Evidence-based research and environmental data
  • Collaboration with marine professionals and conservation organizations
  • Long-term planning focused on sustainability and animal welfare
  • Transparency and responsible nonprofit practices

Looking Ahead

Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom is focused on building the foundation for a future dolphin sanctuary while continuing to expand research and public engagement efforts. As our work grows, we aim to collaborate with experts, partners, and supporters who share our commitment to ethical marine conservation.

Innovative Funding & Education

To support long-term sanctuary development, Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom is exploring the creation of a 3D ocean-themed museum. This immersive experience would combine education, conservation storytelling, and interactive exhibits to engage the public while helping generate sustainable funding for future dolphin sanctuary operations.

The goal is to create a space where visitors can learn about marine life, conservation challenges, and ethical alternatives to captivity—while directly contributing to real-world impact. This concept reflects OCWOF’s commitment to innovative, sustainable solutions that support both conservation and public engagement.
